昆虫機能を利用した新しい薬学の創生を目指して
治療効果のある新規の医薬品候補化合物を探索し、医療現場に提供することが「カイコ創薬」の目標である。従来の哺乳動物を使った治療効果の評価は、コストと動物愛護の観点から実施が難しくなっている。カイコを代替動物として使えば、この問題を回避し、開発の早い段階で治療効果を指標とした探索が可能となる。カイコをモデルとした実験系をすばやく構築し、望ましい生理活性を示す物質を探索してヒトの暮らしを豊かにする方法を提案できるのではないかと私たちは考えている。社会実装可能な具体的な成果をもとに、この目標を達成することが「カイコ創薬」が目指すものである。そのためには、医薬品に限らず、機能性についてエビデンスのある新しい食材（すなわち、機能性食品）の創出に貢献することが重要である。これらを「カイコ創薬」の使命と位置づけ、私たちは日々研究開発活動をおこなっている。
Towards the novel drug discovery using insect functions
The primary objective of Drug Discovery by Silkworm Models is to search for new drug candidate compounds with therapeutic effects and provide them to the medical field. Evaluation of therapeutic effects using conventional mammalian models has become difficult due to cost and animal welfare considerations. Using the silkworm as a surrogate animal avoids this problem and enables exploration using therapeutic efficacy as an indicator in the early stages of development. We believe that we can propose a way to enrich human life by rapidly constructing an experimental system using the silkworm as a model and searching for substances that exhibit desirable bioactivity. The goal of Drug Discovery by Silkworm Models is to achieve this goal based on concrete results that can be implemented in society. In order to achieve this goal, it is important to contribute to the creation of not only pharmaceuticals but also new foods with evidence of functionality (i.e. functional foods). We carry out our research and development activities with this mission in mind.
